Meedan is a nonprofit social technology company. Our mission is to forward global understanding and tolerance by providing people and communities with advanced technologies to enable dialogue, media sharing, and personal publishing across languages.

We are building technologies for aggregating, geolocating, and translating (via distributed human and machine approaches) global media, opinion, and conversations. In terms of implementing these technologies, we extend these tools to both individual users via an open public platform and to a global network of NGO, University, and ‘.org’ partners via custom solutions and web services. Meedan supports the growth of a translation community through providing competitive and professional translation services to our partners.

Meedan is looking for energetic coders who enjoy working on big problems like the multi-lingual read/write web and cross-cultural interaction. As a web designer for Meedan you will work not only in code, but with a view to that code as a tool for users; we put interaction design and usability at the front of all of our development. You will work closely with Meedan’s designers to create highly usable web applications. This is a part-time contracting position primarily writing CSS/SCSS and HTML in a Drupal environment. You will be an enthusiastic GitHub user and will have strong Javascript skills.

Location:

Distributed (no re-location requirements)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Drupal themes as required based on Meedan’s requirements
  • Work in JavaScript to develop and debug front-end issues
  • Participate in site-building activities such as creating content types, views, blocks, configuring 3rd-party modules, etc.
  • Commit code and configuration to GitHub using Features module
  • Daily check-in on the Meedan-dev Skype Chat at the beginning and end of each working shift
  • Time tracking via the Harvest application at the completion of each shift
  • Monthly review of progress with your supervisor
  • Monthly invoice generated via Harvest application
  • Learning from colleagues and having fun while working at Meedan

Key Qualifications:

We are a fast-paced, small, nonprofit start-up that relies heavily on the unique skills of each team member. Our team-members are able to work flexibly and respond to challenges across a range of project areas.

We are looking for an individual who possesses the following:

  • Experience with HTML & CSS. Experience with SASS a plus.
  • Experience with Drupal 6 theming. Experience with Drupal 7 theming a plus.
  • Experience with jQuery plugin integration and troubleshooting
  • Experience with site building – Taxonomy, Blocks, CCK, Views, Features a must. Context, OG, Display Suite, etc. a plus.
  • Experience with drush, git and GitHub
  • Experience with working in distributed teams
  • Ability to speak both Arabic and English is strongly preferred but not required

Reports To:

This position will report to Meedan’s Director of Engineering, Karim Ratib.

Compensation, Hours, and Employment Status:

This job will be offered as a full time contracting position for an initial (trial) three months period starting immediately. Usual hours will be agreed in advance. The compensation will be commensurate with experience and previous employment.
