Translation

During the course of a 20 month engagement, Meedan worked closely with the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) on a technology and social translation project called Wiki Arabi. In this project Meedan has overseen work to build a community of expert translators from leading Arab universities to translate key science, technology and health Wikipedia articles into Arabic. In the initial phase, completed in October 2011, Wiki Arabi translated 2105 articles consisting in 1,481,489 words.

The Wiki Arabi Arabic website provides translation workflow tools including a mechanism for users to track which articles have been translated to supplement Wikipedia’s own infrastructure. Meedan has gathered and provided management oversight to a combination of professional and volunteer translators from Arab universities who are familiar with the subject-specific terms and concepts in both Arabic and English necessary for translating science, technology and health articles.
